This Week:
Eco-Buds will meet Wednesday, April 23 at noon.  Meet in the Field House to set-up for the activity fair.

Any students interested in taking Summer Driver Education - the Summer School Applications can be picked up in the registrar’s office beginning today.

Are you adventurous?  Do you like to zipline, snorkel, hike, learn about other cultures?  If so, Spring Break in Costa Rica is for you!!  Please plan on attending an informational meeting Tuesday, April 22 at 6:00 p.m. in the Forum Room.  If you cannot attend the meeting, please see Mrs. Wheetley in Room W212.

Do you enjoy dancing?  If so, then come and tryout for the DHS dance team! Clinics will be held on Wednesday April 23rd and Thursday April 24th from 3:00-5:30 PM in the dance room here at DHS!  Auditions will be held on Friday April 25th starting at 5 PM. Information and flyers can be found around the school.  Dance experience is encouraged. You must have an updated physical, permission slip (found in the athletic office), and dress in appropriate dance attire.  Please find Ms. Minogue for more information.

Up Coming:
Juniors and Seniors:  Prom will be Saturday, May 10th at NIU's Duke Ellington Ballroom from 6:00 to 11:00. Tickets may be purchased now thru April 29th for $55 each in W109. If you are bringing a non-DHS guest, be sure to pick up the guest form in W109 or the main office.

The Orange and Black Jackpot Bowling Booster Bash is Saturday April 26th at Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb.  Tickets are now available. This annual event will feature Jackpot Bowling, Food, Silent Auction, 50/50 Raffle and many other fun events. The Boosters contribute an average of $60,000.00 annually to the athletic programs at the high school and both middle schools for uniforms/ equipment, scholarships, and banquets.  Fundraising events such as the Booster Bash allow the Boosters to continue to do so.  Please consider becoming a sponsor or donating a silent auction item to this event.  For all donor, sponsorship, and ticket information please visit www.barbboosters.org.  Go Barbs!

DHS plant Sale at the DeKalb High School Greenhouse will be going on May 2nd 3-6PM and May 3rd  8AM - Noon. There will be Geraniums, Impatients, Snapdragons, Vegetables, Hanging Baskets and more!  Come on out and take a look!


Ongoing:

Senior End of year information:  Cap & Gown Delivery – Wednesday, May 28th & Thursday, May 29th during lunches.  All school fees must be paid in order to receive your cap & gown.  Last Day Senior Attendance – Friday, May 30, 2014.  Senior Picnic – Wednesday, June 4th – 11:30 AM – Katz Park.  Senior Boat Trip – Thursday, June 5th – Depart DHS at 9:00 AM – Must have Boarding Pass turned in to attend.  Mandatory Graduation Practice – Friday, June 6th – 1:00 PM – NIU Convocation Center.  Graduation Day – Saturday, June 7th.  Student must arrive no later than 9:00 AM.  Attendees are able to be seated at 9:00 AM.  Graduation ceremony  begins promptly at 10:00AM.

Football workouts on the turf. Bring your cleats. 

The weight room will be open under the supervision of Coach Pater and/or Coach Weckler from 3:00 – 4:30, Monday through Friday for the remainder of the school year.  No one is allowed in the weight room without supervision.

Homework help group Gear Up!  All students are welcome to “Kick it into Gear” each Wednesday from 1:40-2:40.  Staff is set up in the cafeteria to encourage students to check their grades or receive help on homework or studying for each class in E107. 

Are you in need of credit recovery or want to take a class to get ahead over the summer, Ombudsman summer school may be the answer for you.  The cost is $200 a class and is not adjusted for free and reduced lunch.  Applications are available in Student Services or on the DHS webpage under Counselors.  The applications are due no later than May 30th but get your application in ASAP as it is first come, first serve.
In addition to the summer program offered through the district, the Student Services department has received summer options from institutions coast to coast.  These materials are located in a wicker basket in the College and Career room.  

Anyone interested in playing football next school year needs to pick up summer camp and calendar forms from Coach Weckler or the tower next to the athletic office.  Get your registration turned in ASAP so we can get your Nike Gear ordered.
DHS Summer School 2014 information is currently available to students.  Enrollment forms can be found in the main office, or the DHS website.  Payment should not be submitted until parents have been notified that their student’s selected course will be meeting during summer school.  This will not occur until the end of this school year.  At that time, payment can be submitted to Rachel Happ (DHS treasurer).  Check should be made out to DHS.  The following classes are full.  We will no longer accept applications for:  Economics, Government, Honors Western Civ., World Geography, Humanities/English and Speech.

RECYCLE, REUSE, REPURPOSE, REDUCE !!!
DHS Eco-Buds would like any of your old cell phones & used ink cartridges to recycle.
We’d also like any used or outdated disc-man or C.D. players to donate to the S.O.A.L. program.
…and last but not least, please bring all your aluminum cans to the DHS Staff Lounge for crushing & recycling.

The Academic Boosters consist of DeKalb High School parents, teachers, administrators and interested members of the DeKalb community. The organization is open to anyone interested in promoting and recognizing academics at DeKalb High School. We sponsor such events as the Academic Letter Night, Honors Ice Cream Social, and the upcoming Academic Cord Recognition.  The group meets every other month at 6:30 in the main office conference room.  Next meeting is April 8th.  Call Angel Smith at 815-754-2120 with any questions.

Scholarships:
Athnet Sports Recruiting Scholarship - Available to: Seniors who were athletes at the high school level. You do not need to be an athlete at the college level.  Application Deadline: May 1st, Award Amount: $1,000.  Eligibility Requirements: Former high school athletes who are enrolled as a full-time student at a two or four year college.  Application Instructions: See website (website here: http://www.athleticscholarships.net/scholarship-contest.htm)
The ALF M. DEISZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD is available each year from the Regional Office of Education or from high school counselors in DeKalb County.  For the graduating DeKalb County High School senior, this award is given in memory of Alf M. Deisz, former DeKalb County Sheriff and DeKalb County Treasurer.  The purpose of the award is to help the applicant continue his/her education in the major field of Police Science or Law Enforcement in a recognized two- or four-year accredited college.  The amount of the award is $500.  Application must be received no later than May 1.  Applications are available on line or in the Student Services Office.
