May News
Spelling
We have three more lists left for the year. The last three deal with spelling words from the theme of traditions. These words will have the suffixes of -ture and -tion, ness and less, and prefixes mis- and mid-.
Handwriting
We will be working on the letters, X, and K.
Math
We have started unit 11 which is about whole number operations. We are working on extending multiplication and divisions operations to a more symbolic and formal level. We will also cover some of the lessons in unit 12. The rest of the book will be sent home, so children can review over the summer. We will also continue to work on our basic addition and subtraction facts to 18. Some students have mastered those and they are working on basic multiplication and division facts.
Reading
We are finishing our sixth theme in ReadingStreet, Traditions. We will be finishing our last three stories. We will then be taking the end of the year benchmark test.
The week of May 7th we will be reading the story A Birthday Basket for Tia. The question is:Why are family celebrations special? This is a realistic fiction story. In this story a family is planning a special birthday and someone makes a special basket. We will be reviewing inflected endings and cause and effect. We will be learning about drawing conclusions and homonyms. Our vocabulary words are: present, aunt, basket, collects, bank and favorite.
The week of May 14th we will be reading Cowboys. The question is: Why should we learn about cowboys? This is a narrative nonfiction story about cowboys and working on a cattle ranch. We will review syllables –tion and –ture and fact and opinion. We will learn about cause and effect and compound words. Our vocabulary words are: cattle, trails, cowboy, herd, campfire, railroad and galloped.
The week of May 21th we will be reading Jingle Dancer. The question is: How do different people celebrate? This is a realistic fiction story. In this story we will learn about a girl who is going to a powwow and wants to dance at it. We will review cause and effect and suffixes. We will learn about prefixes and context clues. Our vocabulary words are: clattering, jingles, drum, voice, borrow, and silver.
The last weeks of school we will be studying about Australia.
Language
We are working on improving our writing of paragraphs. We are working on adding details. We are also working on commas in compound sentences and indenting paragraphs. We will continue to improve our writing by using what we have learned. We will continue to have writing workshop on Friday so that we can work on our creative writing..
Social Studies
We will finish theme four called We Explore Community Changes. In this theme we will continue to compare and contrast past and present modes of transportation and communication in the United States. We are also learning the history of DeKalb, which is part of our second grade curriculum.
Science
We are finishing our last units of the year, Physical Science. We are learning abut matter. We will then be learning about changes in motion and forces.
