Welcome to Team 6 Black Hawks!

Team 6Black – The Blackhawks – has been soaring into the new school year.  First, in science, students have rocketed through forces of erosion.  They have learned about how wind, glaciers, and even gravity can break down our seemingly impenetrable Earth’s crust.  Students our investigating Earth’s soil and should be headlong into research for the final project due before break.  Circling into math, the new school year has found students rising to meet the challenge of making sense out of numbers – number sense.  There math project math had students deciding what was their favorite number and the multiple ways in which it could be expressed.  Currently, students are increasing their knowledge of fractions.  Next, Language Arts flies in with a strong emphasis on vocabulary.  Students were able to showcase their skills in a mystery/adventure book talk, as well as in a descriptive writing “Monster” of a project.  Presently, students are working on non-fiction reading and writing.  Book talks will begin at the end of second quarter.  Finally, ascending past the restraints of time, students in social studies have been interpreting the rise and fall of ancient civilizations.  Sixth graders are grateful to the DeKalb Education Foundation for a grant that allowed the Field Museum to send an expert to our school to discuss the history and process of mummification.  Included in this experience, the Field expert was able to show students how geography affects settlement patterns and how agriculture is linked to religion.  Students then had the opportunity to practice their skill at wrapping “mummy dummies.”  And, all participated in wailing ceremonies for our dearly departed Nefer, Marisimu, Nut, and Khufu.  So far, the Blackhawks have risen above belief that sixth grade is a drag.
