...bring May flowers!
As we’re nearing the end of the school year, one would think things would slow down a bit, but alas, that is not the case. As always, we are very busy in first grade! The children continue to work very hard. Each child is truly amazing!! Click on an icon for the latest information in first grade.
Check out this link to learn ways to help your child become a lifelong reader: http://www.cedu.niu.edu/ltcy/literacyclinic/raisingReaders/index.shtml Along with some short articles pertaining to reading skills and strategies, there is also a link to videos demonstrating how to encourage your child towards reading and understanding independently. Enjoy!
The April reading calendar is due now. Please send it to school with your child if you have not already done so. Continue recording minutes read on the May calendar that was sent home on April 27. We are working on reading a variety of genres – specifically poetry, non-fiction and fiction. As you are reading with your child, you can ask your child what he notices about the features in nonfiction books, what the main idea is and some details she learned. If you are reading a fiction, you can ask about the characters, setting, events, problem and solution in the story. In poetry, look for interesting ways the author presents his work.
When and if you have any questions, please feel free to call me at school (815) 825-2081 or e-mail me at: Linda.Tyrrell@dist428.org
Continue to enjoy the first grade journey. It is truly an amazing one!
